A new year, a new set of coasters. In the off season, coaster enthusiasts get excited for these new rides and spend time watching the construction webcams. There is not much we can do in winter except get excited for opening day. Here's a look at the new coasters for 2014.
Banshee at King's Island will be the longest inverted coaster when it opens in just 65 days. Banshee's seven inversions promise to give riders something to scream about. Banshee heats up in the second half of the ride, hitting its top speed of 68 mph and keeping intensity high. Instead of slowing as the coaster continues, Banshee speeds up. Inverted coasters aren't normally my favorite type of ride, but Banshee looks like a game-changer for me.
Kentucky Kingdom's Lightning Run is small, but is sure to pack a punch. This hyper-lite focuses on giving riders airtime, pushing lateral g-forces on curves, and keeping thrills high with a layout that's interesting and changes things up. I was hoping Kentucky Kingdom would purchase an Intamin mega-lite, but this little coaster could be worth the 5 hour drive to The Kingdom.
Goliath will certainly be worthy of its name. It features the biggest drop of any wooden coaster and that initial drop should get the ride started off nicely. When I was at the construction site of Goliath, even the air time hill looked massive, and the initial drop will tower over that when it's finished. Rocky Mountain Construction pulled out all stops on this one with the steepest drop for a woodie and two inversions. Maybe this will be the ticket to a very rare (or maybe the first?) Golden Ticket award for Great America. I know I'll be waiting however long it takes to get my first ride on what is shaping up to be a great coaster.
Rocky Mountain Construction is behind another 2014 coaster at Six Flags Mexico. The old, bumpy Medusa gets a revamp and will transform into the silky smooth hybrid Medusa Steel Coaster. It's not as tall or fast as Goliath, but Rocky Mountain is on a roll, so I'm guessing Medusa will give Goliath a run for its money.
Keep counting down the days and I'll see you in line.
Coasters are my passion. It's what I do, it's who I am.
